I am on an island called Don Det, in an area of southern Laos called the 4,000 Islands. Today I: swam in the river, rode a bicycle, tried playing kick volleyball, ate grilled fish, swung in a hammock and read a book about Laos history. I’m staying in a small thatched bungalow on stilts over the Mekong. I can see stars here, especially after the electricity on the island goes off after eleven. Tomorrow I’m going to try to spot the elusive Irawaddy dolphins.

Elusive to you. One pod of them moved in down the street, and now the whole neighborhood is going dolphin.

No dolphins were seen or harmed (nor were any classics of the French nouvelle vague). I went fishing with a local fisherman instead of dolphin hunting, but we caught nothing. I joked that fishing with a farang was bad luck, and the fisherman seemed to completely agree with me. I did learn that you need very good balance to fish Lao-style…you must stand up in a wooden canoe and hurl a weighted net, starting from a coiled position and releasing with a graceful, discus-throwing motion. I was not a success at this. I could do the coiled-up part okay, but that was about it. Hey, at least I got a nice sunburn on my face, neck, and shoulders!
