I just arrived in Luang Prabang, Laos Luang Prabang after a two-day slow boat ride down the Mekong. This was not as romantic as it sounds (if that indeed sounded romantic to you); unfortunately it was more like an episode of Road Rules, Apocalypse Now edition. This after a couple of days of traveling to get to the Laos border so have been constantly on the move. I’m going to stay put in Luang Prabang (a beautiful colonial town) and rest up for a few days and eat many French-inspired baguette sandwiches, about which I shall dutifully report.

Good to have you back, old friend. Now go and put some meat back on your bones with some starchy, European-inspired cuisine.

Hey TM Crush,
Just had dinner with Alex in Manila, he gave me your site.
Enjoy the awesome food in Laos, especially laap and sindad, if you haven’t already..

Somehow you managed to squeeze some incredibly romantic photographs out of a journey that you allege to be “not as romantic as it sounds”.
That one with those enormously weathered boulders on the beach actually choked me up a little bit. But then, I’m a sentimental old fool.

Squirrel! The food in Laos is indeed awesome . . . I have had plenty of laap but haven’t tried sindad (not sure what it is). I became addicted to the fried Mekong river weed they serve in Luang Prabang. It is the greatest bar snack of all time. Luang Prabang also has a delicious hot chili paste condiment called jaew bong, which has buffalo hide as an ingredient
Forbis: The Mekong River journey had its moments for sure–I really had to tune out the surroundings on the boat at times to focus on the scenery, but it has already become much more romantic in my memory. You are still a sentimental fool, though.
