Squirrel! The food in Laos is indeed awesome . . . I have had plenty of laap but haven't tried sindad (not sure what it is). I became addicted to the fried Mekong river weed they serve in Luang Prabang. It is the greatest bar snack of all time. Luang Prabang also has a delicious hot chili paste condiment called jaew bong, which has buffalo hide as an ingredient

Forbis: The Mekong River journey had its moments for sure--I really had to tune out the surroundings on the boat at times to focus on the scenery, but it has already become much more romantic in my memory. You are still a sentimental fool, though.

Somehow you managed to squeeze some incredibly romantic photographs out of a journey that you allege to be "not as romantic as it sounds".

That one with those enormously weathered boulders on the beach actually choked me up a little bit. But then, I'm a sentimental old fool.

Good to have you back, old friend. Now go and put some meat back on your bones with some starchy, European-inspired cuisine.
